ShiftUS - US Fair Share
The United States is the largest historical emitter of greenhouse gas emissions globally and has the greatest capacity to reduce emissions as a country. Therefore, it stands to reason that the US should do the most to combat the climate crisis: Not only bringing down its own emissions immediately but also helping other developing nations leapfrog technologies and behaviors that emit emissions that are not necessary if we help finance and share technology and resources. That is the US’ Fair Share of solving the climate crisis. Is it happening? No, but the Fair Shares Collaborative, which is facilitated by People’s Justice Council and has dozens of US and International partners, is showing a pathway that our country and communities can take to create a better world for all of us.
2021 Fair Share NDC Explained
The Fair Share Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)
Every five years the US and other countries that have signed onto the Paris Agreement must submit a Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat to be reported to the Conference of the Parties (COP). Progressive organizations, part of the Fair Shares Collaborative, are coming together to write what we would like the US government to commit to in its NDC in 2025. The Fair Share NDC will be coming out at the end of the summer so we can help advise the government on what we are expecting to see next year. We will post it here when it is finished!
It is time to ShiftUS!
Once the NDC Fair Share Document is completed, it will be time to show the country and the world how we can ShiftUS, to build better, equitable, healthy, and just communities while addressing the climate crisis with real solutions that will require system change.
"We cannot make the changes that are necessary for the world unless we can imagine it. To ShiftUS we need to dream of what is possible, and the world we want to live in."
—Natalie Lucas, ShiftUS and Fair Share NDC Coordinator
All of us, including you, are going to imagine what our country, communities, regions, and states look like if we actually address the climate crisis in the way that is necessary to bring emissions down. We are going to imagine what our transportation systems could look like, how energy will be produced, what farming sustainably can be like, and how our communities are built. Once we can imagine it, we can build it. It will be up to each and every one of us to then take our ideas to our communities and make it a reality.

In addition to creating the world we want, we need to set the foundation to ensure our success, and elections matter. We need to vote for candidates who care about climate, and encourage others around us to do the same.
